English: Grand Central Hotel, Allentown, Pennsylvania, 1900. The hotel was named the "Black Bear Hotel" until 1890, then renovated and expanded. Until 1891, travelers would be brought to the hotel on horse-drawn streetcars from the Allentown Railway Stations at 3d and Hamilton Streets. Primarily cated to travelling buisinessmen and unmarried men who came to Allentown to work in the silk or other industries that established themselves in the city after the Civil War.
The Grand Central Hotel was where Max and Charles Hess first rented space for their dry goods buisness in 1897. Later the Hess Brothers would buy the property and turn it into Allentown's largest department store. |
