Summary
[edit]Description1884 Kangaroo Dwarf Safety Bicycle Coventry Transport Museum.jpg |
"This type of bicycle was an attempt to make the big Penny Farthing safer. Although it has the same shape as the Penny Farthing (big front wheel, small back wheel) the gearing on the front wheel (the small chains and gears) means the 38 inch front wheel will be 'geared up' to a 56 inch wheel. This means it will go as fast as a big wheeled bike but be safer because the rider is closer to the ground. The Kangaroo was very popular as a racing bike in 1884, winning many races against Penny Farthings. The shiny metal part that goes over the front wheel and up to the handle bars, is a 'spoon' brake, which pushed down onto the front wheel." Coventry Transport Museum, UK. 2009 |
