1873 Map of the City of Chicago
Description

This map of the Chicago is color coded by ward. The map shows the city just two year after the great Chicago Fire of 1871. Each street is labeled and all railroad lines are noted throughout the map. Park and boulevards are colored in green and the reaches of the city is outlined in red. A line extending northeast off the coast delineates the tunnel to the fresh water intake crib. The map identifies “Soldier’s Graves,” (Confederate POWs) near Lincoln Park, which were earlier noted as “Rebel Graves.” The monument to Senator Stephen Douglas and his grave site is also noted at his former property at 35th and Lake.

Railroads and waterways converge at the mouth of the Chicago River and resulted in what was once the artery for goods and raw materials to pass though from the eastern states to the ever-developing western frontier. This convergence is what was responsible for Chicago’s enormous growth from a small mid-western town to a national and eventually international powerhouse city of commerce and trade.
