Description

Old Clarendon Winery buildings built in 1858 for Edward Peake.

Surveyed land was put up for sale in Clarendon valley in 1840 and Richard Blundell purchased a section. In 1846 James Philcox purchased part of the section and subdivided a town. Within a couple of years George Morphett, (brother of Sir John Morphett) who had purchased the adjoining land to Philcox subdivided his land also for the town of Clarendon. The town grew slowly in this steep valley. The Tally Ho Inn opened in 1848 (now demolished) and later in 1855 the Royal Oak Hotel opened on former Morphett land. To boost his town Morphett donated land for a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in 1849 on land just above his own house- Blackwood Lodge. The Grecian/Gothic style stone chapel (opened in 1851) remains as a private residence but the surrounding gravestones were moved to a new cemetery in 1875. When the new Methodist church opened in the main street in 1875 this church closed and it became the town school and finally a Druids Hall. Morphett’s house Blackwood Lodge dates from 1844 but has been added on to many times including the 1860s and 1890s. Almost next door to Blackwood Lodge is the former home of one of George Morphett’s daughters. The central part of this house was built early but the ends with bay windows were erected in 1876. Morphett’s daughter ran a store here but in 1922 a truck ran into the building and damaged it. It has not yet been repaired!

The other activity which set Clarendon apart was the establishment of a vineyard and finally a winery. William Leigh (of Leigh Street Adelaide) bought Clarendon land for a vineyard in the 1840s although he never visited the colony. His SA agent was Sir John Morphett. Consequently John Morphett’s brothers George and Henry Morphett leased the land and planted the first vines around 1848. Edward Peake took over the vineyard in 1853 from Leigh, and appears to have purchased it and built the first cottage on the site in 1858. Peake left Clarendon in 1860 and sold the winery to Joseph Gillard who took over the vineyard and a two story cottage. Gillard ran the winery for 40 years. He built the more winery buildings in 1865 and used to sell most of his wine to Penfolds. In the 1970s the winery complex was renovated and turned into a conference centre. On the road into the winery complex is a fine two storey 19th century house built by Thomas Shipster the town undertaker. He donated land for the recreation ground and playground.

The fertile valley at Clarendon helped the town prosper. By the 1860s and 1870s it was a thriving place and a new wave of building occurred, mainly in yellow sandstone. Notable buildings are the wonderful Gothic Court House and Police Station with gothic stables at the rear, all erected in 1868. The architect was William Abbot and the builder George Sara of Willunga. Next door is the Bible Christian Methodist Church built earlier in 1854 with a slate roof. When the 3 Methodist churches amalgamated in 1900 this church as sold off and became the Council Chambers. It is now used as a town museum. In front is a lighted war memorial for seven young locals who gave their lives in war. Nearby on the other side of the main street is the 1875 Methodist Church (now Uniting) built in Grecian style with triangular pediment and pilasters besides the front door. Close by is the Oddfellows Hall designed by the same architect as the Methodist church but built before it in 1872. Further along is the General Store with the fancy Dutch gables. The central part was built in 1873 and the ends were added in the 1880s. At the bottom of the main street are the government school dating from 1885 and the adjoining headmaster’s residence which was built in 1901. (Earlier private schools existed in Clarendon from the mid 1852.) On the same side is the Community Hall in the reserve which was built as the Clarendon Butter Factory in 1893. (But a butter factory had existed in Clarendon since 1890.) After it ceased making butter in 1906 it became the Rechabite Lodge and since 1972 it has been the Community Hall. As noted with the history of Happy Valley, the Clarendon Weir on the Onkaparinga River was constructed between 1892 and 1894 with associated water pipes to pump the water to Happy Valley Reservoir. The weir wall was faced with Macclesfield marble. Many of these Clarendon buildings and the weir are on the Register of the National Estate and their permanence in fine sandstone has been the subject of a recent book by Tracy Wickstein called Historic Clarendon: the Art of Stone, published in 2010.
