Description
Engraving of the Franklin County Courthouse as it looked in 1842. This image was taken from the Franklin County, Ohio 1842 map by E. F. Wheeler, Columbus, Ohio. The first Franklin County Courthouse in Columbus proper cost $40,000 to build and included a county jail in the basement and a sheriff's residence on the first floor. The building was constructed in 1840, and was located at the south-east corner of South High and Mound Streets. On March 30, 1879, a fire destroyed many public records in the building. It was ordered to be demolished on April 13, 1884.
