1814 Crossing of the Rhine Memorial, Mannheim

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: To put an end to the napoléonic régime – once again severely defeated at Leipzig in October 1813 –, the allied Russian, Prussian and Austrian forces kept pushing forward and simultaneously crossed the Rhine early January 1814 on a broad front stretching from Koblenz to Basel, en route to Paris which they all entered triumphantly on March 31, 1814.

At Mannheim, the crossing by Russian troops under the command of General Fabian Gottlieb von der Osten-Sacken (1752-1837) took place on January 1st, 1814, and is commemorated by a monument inaugurated one century later : on January 1st, 1914.

The monument is now erected in an industrial area, about near the mouthing of the Neckar into the Rhine ; easily accessible, it is however no longer precisely linked to the historical event.
