1813 Crossing of the Rhine River, Kaub – Blücher Memorial, Head

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Head of the 4-meter high statue created in 1893 by Friedrich Schaper (1841-1919)
portraying Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Fürst von Wahlstatt (1742-1819),
dressed in the uniform he wore during the German Wars of Liberation from the napoléonic régime (Befreiungskriege 1813-1815).

Cast in bronze, signed F. Schaper, dated 1894 and erected on a 4-meter high plinthe, the statue was solemnly inaugurated on June 18, 1894
to celebrate the anniversary of the memorable Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815).

Generalfeldmarschall Blücher crossed the Rhine River at Kaub (spelled Caub at that time). The crossing did not occur at midnight on December 31, 1813, as a vibrant romantic account insists, but rather over several days and at several places spread between Basel and Koblenz, for the several Corps of Prussian, Russian, Austrian and Swedish Armies all en route to Paris which they triumphantly entered on March 31, 1814.
