1813 – Liberation of the Netherlands – Veessen, Bashkir warrior

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The commemorative monument, created by Alexander Taratynov (Dutch-Russian sculptor, b. 1956), was presented to the Kingdom of the Netherlands by the Republic of Bashkortostan to commemorate the crossing of the IJssel River on 19 November 1813 by a Cossack detachment, part of the Russian Army, thus contributing to the liberation of the war-torn Continental Europe by the endless napoléonic régime.

Unveiled on January 11th, 2018

Conventionally, this spot is the starting point of the Liberation of the Netherlands from the napoléonic régime.

Historical context.

On the Western Front : the Duke of Wellington had nearly completed the Liberation of Portugal and Spain thanks to a succession of successful battles, culminating with the Victory of Vitoria, Spain, on June 21st, 1813, celebrated by Ludwig van Beethoven himself (Opus 91).

On the Eastern Front : after the resounding Victory of Leipzig, Germany, on October 18th, 1813 over an assemblage of troops recruited by force by the napoléonic régime all over Europe, from Portugal to Prussia, the days of that régime were counted.
