Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Looking north at the south facade of 1800 I Street NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Also known as International Square, this building originally occupied just the eastern half of the block (between 18th and 19th Streets NW, between I and K Streets NW). An 11-story, Modernist building was completed in November 1976. It featured a ninth-floor balcony with non-structural columns, interior atrium, and ground level setback retail concourse. This building is in the rear-ground of this image. A second building on the southwest corner of the block opened in 1979 (foreground left of this image), and a third building (not pictured) opened on the northwest corner of the block in 1980. All three buildings were designed by architect Vlastimil Koubek and constructed to appear as if they were a single structure, and they are now linked internally to be so.

This image shows how the first and second building were linked. The ninth floor, with its balcony, was extended to run the entire circumference of the building without interruption. However, a space exists between the two buildings on the 10th and 11th floors.

International Square also featured a vertically inverted series of setbacks on the southeast and northwest corners, which indicate the main entrances to the building and its interior atrium. The southeast inverted setbacks are visible in the rearground (at bottom).
