17th C. mount |

Description |
English: Gilded copper-alloy mount of probable 17th C. AD date. The mount is a slender sheild-shape and is decorated on its upper surface with the design (in relief) of a bearded man's face (possibly Christ). This sits within a simple raised border. The top of the shield is not flat but has a decorative central protrusion with, either side of this, a concave section and a decorative split on each of the two corners. At the bottom of the shield is a circular loop from which something may originally hung. The reverse of the piece is flat and plain, apart from two integral copper-alloy rivets. These sit one above the other and are circular in section, with a diameter of 2.1mm. The lower rivet is intact and measures 9mm long, whilst the upper rivet is damaged. Both rivets are bent downwards, indicating the method by which the piece was originallly attached, probably to a belt. The plate measures 30.8mm high by 15mm wide and 2.5mm thick. The weight is 5.01g. The upper surface retains much of its original gilding. |
