Summary

Description	English: Believed to be the oldest standing building in Lancaster Courthouse village the Clerks office was built in 1797 and later expanded in 1834. This building sits right on the edge of the main road though town. This building was built with bricks made locally and was in use until 1937. All records would have been processed through this office from deeds, marriage licenses, to legal documents. Lancaster County is one of the few counties in Virginia that has an almost complete set of records from the colonial period to current. Notably during the Civil war they did not send the records to Richmond and therefore were not lost when the city burned in 1865. Visitors can view the building and see surveyor's plats and other exhibits inside from a by gone time.
