Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1765 Engraving of Roman fresco depicting the fall of Icarus found in the Casa della Danzatrice aka Casa della Ballerino (Pompeii VI 17,10). Full plate description translated from Italian: "ALTHOUGH this painting may have suffered, it has at least the merit of representing a fable, which in no other ancient monument is entirely exemplified, as can be seen here. In the air, balanced on his wings, and with a reddish colored cloth fastened to his belt by a yellow sash, Daedalus is depicted looking closely at his son Icarus on the shore with a broken wing: and also looking attentively at a fisherman, who is holding a stone, and a rod, or other fishing tool."
"The two sailors in the boat are equally surprised. The canvas field is airy: the shore, the water, the stones, the trees, and the building with a mask above it, everything is naturally painted."
