Title |
1724 Knife fragment.jpg |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy knife handle fragment length 17mm, width 11mm, thickness 1mm. The artefacts is made from sheet copper alloy and is shaped like an inverted trapezoid when viewed in plan, there is a rectangular slot one third of the way down where the tang of a knife would have passed through, this slot has been punched through the plate and the excess material on the reverse has not been cleaned away.
The artefact is in a fair condition, corrosion has affected the whole of the artefact leaving a pitted surface. This is a sheet copper alloy plate that would have formed the front plate of a tanged knife handle. The use of copper alloy plates on the terminals of knife handles is a common feature of 12th-14th century, which is the probable date for this object. |
