English: Henri Joutel, in 1687 used the word Chicagou, said to mean "garlic" -- and the etymology of the city's name is said to be derived from this. The word was spelled this way in Joutel's book about La Salle, and the spelling and definition in time became widely popular and authoritative. Of note, this 1713 book, in French was translated into English the next year, 1714. A mistake appeared in the English translation, the last two letters of "Chicagou" were misprinted as "-on." As a result, a new ahistorical thread of etymology was begun, i.e., "-on," in these Algonquian languages having the sense of "place of." The error was corrected in a translation into English in 1906.
