Title |
Post Medieval knife stop end, base |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy 16th century knife end-stop in the form of a stylised anthropomorphic male head. The end-stop was a decorative terminal on a knife; the blade of the knife would have continued along the whole length of the knife and there would probably have been a wooden or bone handle around the lower part of the blade with a end-stop at the terminal. The head sits on top of an oval shaped plinth with a slot on the base into which the end of the knife tang would have fitted. The face and hair on the head are formed with simple grooves. A very similar example can be seen in Brian Reads 'Matal Artefacts of Antiquity' Fig.57, No. 662. The terminal weighs 11.84g and measures 1.41mm in length, 10.06mm in width (ear to ear) and 12.6mm in thickness (nose to back of head). |
