Title
16th century bone knife handle
Description
English: Late 16th century carved bone knife handle. The top of the handle is carved into the form of a three dimensional human head wearing a high collar and sporting a goatee beard. The features are worn but eyes, nose and mouth are visible. There is also two horizontal incisions on either cheek. At the back of the head is incised a series of horizontal grooves. The head is sitting on a narrowed segment of the handle beneath which is a vertically segmented band which continues around the back of the handle. Immediately beneath this is a pair of parallel grooves which is repeated on the back. 14mm beneath is another pair of grooves which is again repeated on the back. The handle slightly tapers. The square tang of the knife is visible at the broken end of the handle.
