On February 19, 2016, fire managers conducted a 1,400 acre prescribed fire near Toccoa, Ga in the Lake Russell WMA. This burn was designed to return fire as a natural part of the ecosystem, improve wildlife habitat, and maintain healthy forest conditions. Additionally, this burn helped improve and maintain the open habitat needed for the rare Georgia aster and federally endangered smooth purple coneflower. This prescribed fire was conducted with supporting firefighters from the Nature Conservancy.
