Title |
15th century lead heart shaped pendant. |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead decorative heart shaped pendant. Probably 15th century. A loop appears to have broken off the top. One side is decorated with a border of transverse lines, three lines running down the cenre of the heart with tranverse lines running across them, a cross on the left side of the heart, and a seven petalled flower and cross on the right side. The other side is decorated with a lattice of intersecting diagonal lines with a dot within each resulting lozenge (diapered). The badge is broken almost in two - it appears to have been bent and subsequently straightened. Length 33.61mm, width 26.8mm, thickness c.2.5mm, weight 9.98g. The decoration is similar to that on pilgrim souvenirs. This may a version of the flowering heart device. Brian Spencer notes that "A few pilgrim souvenirs, both ampullae and pilgrim signs, incorporate the flowering heart device as a symbol of heavenly love... But the motif was probably used much more often to suggest earthly love." |
