Title |
15th - 16th Century copper-alloy "Beehive" Thimble |
||
Description |
English: A Post Medieval complete copper-alloy thimble, dating from c. AD 1450 to 1550. The thimble is a 'beehive' type with a tonsured top. The lower rim is slightly raised on the outside. The circular Indentations on the body of the thimble have been hand punched in a left-handed spiral from the tonsured top to bottom rim. The method of manufacture of the body is uncertain (although the indentations are hand punched). The surface patina is a mid green colour. When found, the inside was filled with hard-packed soil which had prevented the shape from being deformed. |
