(active in 1400-1450) Elogium on Giangaleazzo Visconti by Pietro da Castellato 1403 Illumination on parchment, 37,6 x 24,2 cm Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris In the last decades of the fourteenth century the Visconti lords of Milan were related to the French court by marriage. This connection shows interestingly in the books produced for the family. Some of the pages of these books are bordered with naturalistic flowers, and this marks the beginning of one final development in manuscript illumination, when the border decoration itself ceased to be mainly a conventional pattern and came to depict a series of realistic objects. This development can be followed in the work of a slightly later court artist, Michellino da Besozzo. Since he appears to have survived up to 1450, he belongs to the fifteenth century. However, already in 1403 he illuminated a de luxe copy of the funeral eulogy pronounced on Giangaleozzo Visconti.
