| Description | Taken on the "EM2 Farewell" Railtour on 15 March 1986. Built for British Railways in the early 1950s for the electrification of the Manchester to Sheffield Woodhead Line, they later got re-classified to class 77. In 1969 all 7 locos were sold to Netherlands Railways (NS) which operated to the same 1500V dc system. After modification works were carried out to 6 (one was used for spares) and they entered service to work passenger and freight services. They were retired from service by NS in 1986. Three have been preserved - one in the Netherlands the other two being returned back to the UK. The photo of 1502 "Electra" was taken during a prolonged photo stop at Amsterdam Centraal. This was one of the two brought back to the UK for preservation. |
