Title
14th C. hat badge or belt mount
Description
English: Medieval copper-alloy mount. Belt mount of probable 14th-century date. The design of the mount is a stylised male head wearing a crown, perhaps a caricature of a king. It has a slightly domed face with large triangular eyes and a strongly defined mouth and cheeks. The crown has a trefoil central portion and a double protrusion on each side. The bottom of the face is squared off. The reverse is flat, apart from the portion behind the face, which is concave. There is a separate copper-alloy rivet projecting from the reverse just below the crown. This is circular in cross-section, with a diameter of 1.5mm and a length of 5mm and is slightly bent. The condition of the object is good, with little wear or corrosion. It measures 16mm high by 13.7mm wide and 1.9mm thick. The weight is 1.85g.

The bend on the rivet gives it a superficial resemblance to the hook from a hat badge, but parallels on the PAS database show that normally the rivet is straight and directly comparable to many other mounts of late 13th- to 15th-century date. Compare BH-F8F72B, LIN-7CC0FE, GLO-5E8AF4, etc.
