Description/Blazon

• Shield: Per fess abased Gules and Argent, a fess abased wavy to base tierced Or, paley of nine of the first and the third, and Azure.
• Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the California Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Gules, the setting sun behind a grizzly bear passant on a grassy field all Proper.
• Motto: ESTRUCTURA Y DEFENDER (Build and Defend).

Symbolism

• Shield: Red and white are the colors of the Corps of Engineers.  The fess is symbolic of strength and support.  The red and yellow pales, suggestive of the arms of Aragon, symbolize the Spanish settlement of California.  The four yellow pales represent the counties of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego, the home area of the organization.  The coastal location is indicated by the wavy blue section, which signifies the Pacific; the white area alludes to the beaches.  The yellow design, taken as a whole, represents the engineering function of construction of bridges, buildings, docks, field fortification, gun emplacements, etc.
• Crest: The crest is that of the California Army National Guard.

Background

The coat of arms was approved on 5 November 1953.  It was rescinded on 30 December 1974.
