Title |
13th century seal matrix |
||
Description |
English: Medieval lead seal matrix. A non-heraldic personal seal of probable 13th century AD date. The object is in good condition, with little wear or damage. It is a pointed oval in shape and measures 39.4mm high by 24.3mm wide and 3.8mm thick. The central image sits within a pointed oval border and consists of what appears to be a spear surrounded by circular impressions. The legend runs anti-clockwise (clockwise on the seal print) and is poorly executed and difficult to read. It seems to read: S'CLEMET SWALEIS. At the top of the seal on the reverse is a lug with a sub-circular central hole. This lug extends into a central vertical rib. The weight of the object is 25.88g. |
