13th century Monnow Bridge, Monmouth

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dating from 1272, the Monnow Bridge is the only remaining fortified river bridge in Britain with its gate tower standing on the bridge. Tolls were collected at the gatehouse. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the bridge became a popular subject for artists; Turner, Gastineau and Cotman produced drawings of it.
