Summary

[edit]
Description Pendleton doesn't only have industrial buildings and 19th Century walk-ups and tenements, but a large collection of vernacular rowhouses as well. These examples are in the Italianate style, with the exception of the building in the last photo, which is in the Second Empire style, as it has a mansard roof. Though common throughout the city, 13th Street in Pendleton happens to have a large concentration of this type of building, likely due to its location near the base of the Prospect Hill neighborhood, which once flowed smoothly into Pendleton before the construction and widening of Liberty Street in the 1960s. These mid-to-late 19th Century houses display the wide variation in style and ornament found in the vernacular Italianate houses around the city, and are part of what makes Pendleton a dynamic, vibrant urban neighborhood.
