Title
13th C. seal and seal matrix
Description
English: Circular lead seal matrix of medieval date. A non-heraldic, personal seal which probably dates from the mid 13th C. AD. The object measures 33mm diameter by 4.8mm thick and weighs 38.33g. It has suffered badly from corrosion and the legend is unclear. The central design sits within a circular border and is a fairly crudely executed fleur-de-lis pattern. The legend is unclear but appears to read: "[S]IGILLU[M] SIUV....." The lettering is poorly executed and heavily damaged. The reverse of the piece is plain, with no evidence of a handle.
