English: Charter (1313) of Count William III of Holland and Zeeland (1287-1337). This is the oldest document in the collection of the Municipal Archives of The Hague. Translation: We William, Count of Hainaut, of Holland, of Zeeland and Lord of Friesland, do make notice to all people, that we have done the inhabitants of our ambacht in The Hague such grace (as follows): That we want those who buy land, or those who inherit land, to be of service to us in all ways. Whether formerly owing us any further service or when still doing so, whether to us or to our offspring, and also concerning those lands that were brought into service by the former counts of Holland. And we command the master of our court in The Hague, that he allows no one who denounces this article, to uphold the rights as they were (formerly) described to them. This letter was sealed with our seal as a charter, on the Saturday after Saint Margaret’s Day (the 14th of July), in the year of our Lord 1313. |
