Summary

[edit]
Description

Budapest Children's Railway, September 1996. One of many systems found in former-communist countries in Europe. These were basically teaching schools for children to learn railway operations under close supervision. As a result they were narrow gauge and of a tourist theme, many in parks. As a result they were also called Pioneer Railways.

The Budapest system opened up in 1950 and is a 760mm gauge, 11km long line starting at Széchenyi hegy through to Hűvösvölgy climbing up through hilly wooded area. Although not connected up to the rest of the Hungarian state rail system MÁV, it is connected by a cog-railway at the Széchenyi hegy end and tram at the other.

A fleet of Mk45 diesels is based at the main depot at Hűvösvölgy, driving is the only task carried out by adults with young children carrying out other tasks. Nowadays the line operates purely as a touriast operation but all year round.

Seen at Szechenyi-hegy on 13 September 1996, Mk45 2005 is seen on one coach train. Train 31236, 17:00Széchenyi-hegy to Hüvösvölgy
