Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Shiva linga are represented in early Indian arts with a variety of creative innovations. One sub-group is the manusha-linga, which exist in five variants – ashtottara-sata-linga (101 or 108 lingams), sahasra-linga (1001 or 1008 lingams), dhara-linga (5 to 64 fluted facets, most Sanskrit texts recommend 2^n, i.e. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64), saiveshtya-linga and mukha-linga (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 faces depending on the number of entrances and levels of mandapa-garbhagriya). The shilpa-sastra texts describes methods to produce these in a systematic manner. The above lingam is a sahasra-linga with 1008 miniature lingam molded on the main linga. It contains 21 odd-placed rows of 48 lingams (21 x 48 = 1008).
