(active 1170s in western Germany) Majestas Domini 1170s Fresco with secco applications Doppelkirche, Schwarzrheindorf The Doppelkirche (Double Church) was built as a place of worship for the adjacent castle of Earl Arnold von Wied, who was provost of Cologne Cathedral and Chancellor of Emperor Konrad III. The church was consecrated on April 24, 1151 by the Archbishop of Cologne and the Elector Arnold von Wied in the presence of Holy Roman Emperor Konrad III. By this time, the murals of the lower church had already been painted by a talented monk from Cologne. The murals of the upper church, probably in the 1170s. Together they constitute one of the most complete sets of Romanesque murals surviving in Germany. The imposing Majestas Domini is in the upper church.
