Anantheshwar (Anteshwar) mandir architecture and artwork

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Ananteshwar temple, also called Anteshwar mandir, is an early 12th-century in Anandpur Bhadia in central Gujarat. It is dedicated to Shiva and traditionally attributed to king Anant Chudasama. The town served as a regional capital and trading post till the 14th-century when it suffered catastrophic depopulation due to Sultanate wars. The town and temple were abandoned. The town and temple were cleaned, restored and resettled in the 17th-century.

The Ananteswar temple is large, sits on a jagati (specially designed platform) and faces east. It included a mandapa, an antarala and a garbhagriya. Except for the original sanctum, the front section – such as the mandapa – was rebuilt in 20th-century. It is devoid of original stone pillars, ceiling and artwork. Ruins from the original temple complex are stacked within the temple premises.

The outer walls are extensively and intricately carved with Hindu artwork. The artwork and the temple show extensive signs of desecration.
