Summary

[edit]
Description 12 West 23rd Street, between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, New York City, was originally a dwelling, built in 1859 for banker and philanthropist Benjamin Nathan, who was murdered there in 1870. Four years later his widow decided to convert the building for commercial use, which was undertaken by architect Griffith Thomas, who added the cast-iron Second Empire facade. The building is located within the Ladies' Mile Historic District. (Source: NYCLPC Ladies' Mile Historic District Designation Report vol. 2)
