Title
1208 Medieval buckle.JPG
Description
English: Cast copper alloy rectangular shaped buckle with separate sheet copper alloy plate, length 33mm width 15mm thickness 2mm, weight 3.74g. The buckle is 15mm long, 16mm wide, 2mm thick, the strap bar is narrowed and recessed. The arms expand from the strap in a convex arch, the outside edges are bevelled. The forward edge is expanded (4mm wide) with a recessed centre that is flanked by two collared knops on the corners. Sheet copper alloy pin is still in place.

The plate 22mm long, 12mm wide, >1mm thick, consists of a sheet of copper alloy that has been folded in two, there is a rectangular slot on the fold for the pin and the sides have been recessed to accommodate the buckle. The terminal of the plate has been truncated, but there are the remains of two rivet holes.

The object is in a poor condition because it has been greatly effected by corrosion, resulting in a pitted surface. Buckles such as this have been found in excavations in London and have been dated to 1200-1450.
