Ruins at Neelakantha Kaleshwara – a Shiva HIndu temple in Kalgi, Karnataka (Western Chalukya dynasty)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kalgi is a village in Chittapur taluk, Gulbarga district. It is about 35 kilometers east of Gulbarga city.

Kalgi village was once much bigger and a major Deccan city in and before the Western Chalukya era. It hosted many Hindu and Jain temples such as the Neelakantha Kaleshwara temple built in 11th to 12th-century CE.

The Neelakantha Kaleshwara temple, also called Neelakantheswara temple, was in ruins, but now is an active temple that has been restored after 1980. A modern shikhara (spire) has been added, lime coated on walls which hides the stone carving and inscriptions above the major statues and reliefs.

A notable feature of this temple is the ragamala carvings. The twelve dancing girls each have a verse inscription to praise Nealakantha Kaleshwara (Shiva), each in a specific meter to be sung in a particular raga (Indian classical music). Most of these are now coated with a layer lime and less obvious to the view.
