JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, German
(active around 1000 in Trier) Gospel Book of Otto III c. 1000 Illumination Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich Amongst the most magnificent and artistically refined codices of the Ottonian period is the Gospel Book of Otto III which was produced around the year 1000. It was produced probably in Trier. This folio represents Christ in the Getshemane Garden (upper scene). It depicts Christ turning to his disciples, and then turning round and kneeling down to pray at the Mount of Olives. This abrupt change in scene and time of the action is marked by a small, delicate tree. The lower scene represents the Capture of Christ.
