Title |
1176 Roman headstud brooch view 1.JPG |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy head stud brooch length 43mm, width 23mm, thickness 20mm, weight 16.48g. Concave cross section wings with a backward facing lug at either end. Both lugs have a hole in the centre for the spring support bar, the spring has been wrapped around the approximately ten times, but the pin missing.
The forward edge of the wings has a squared face covered by scrollwork and a recessed border at the terminal. There is a loop which sits on a small platform on the top of the head, the top of the loop is missing. Below the loop is a small crest 5mm long with a circular recess below that would have held enamel. There is further scrollwork that runs down either side of the leg, which terminates with a circular foot. This foot is concave at the base and would have held a stone. The catch plate on the reverse is heavily damaged and only the lower section remains. The overall condition is good with that artefact retaining its original patina. This artefacts dates to 80-120AD. |
