Title
1172 Early Medieval strip strap mount.JPG
Description
English: Cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount, Length 27mm, width 34mm, thickness 9mm weight 15.95g. The artefact would have been rectangular in plan but the bottom section is truncated, this is an old break. Semicircular projection on the top with a rivet hole in the centre. In the centre of the piece is an animal face mask with bulbous eyes a ridge above them and a wave line of two semicircles below. Open work flanks the head, the right side of which is missing, with further open work below. The object has suffered considerably from corrosion removing its entire original surface and leaving a pitted dark brown layer. The art style of the corresponds with the Viking art style Ringerike. Similar examples are illustrated in Williams, 1995, pages 4-5 and are classified as Group B mounts that date to the dates to the 11th century.
