Description

This finely carved trumpet has a beautiful patina and is finely carved. Measures 89x9x13cm


Music permeates almost every aspect of African tribal life. Important simply as entertainment it is also an integral part of many ceremonies and rituals, particularly those connected with birth, initiation, marriage, and death. The art of performance is taken very seriously by many African peoples, and musicians, notably drummers, are usually trained from a very young age. Instruments of every kind are found in sub-Saharan Africa. Idiophones, especially rattles and xylophones, are very important, and along with flutes, trumpets, and horns, are popular ensemble instruments. Drums of every type are played throughout the continent and in some tribes have considerable ritual significance. Chordophones, including bows, harps, Iyres, lutes, fiddles, and zithers, are found in most areas and are commonly used as solo or accompanying instruments.
