1150 Medieval Ampulla obverse.jpg |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead alloy Ampulla, length 50mm, width 28mm, thickness 8mm. Circular design, with a long neck that would have been folded back on its self. The neck of the vessel is complete and has been straitened out so that it is 30mm long, 28mm wide. The remains of two handles/suspension loops, project from either side of the base of the neck. The main body of the vessel expands into a circular design 28mm wide. The obverse heavily worn resulting in the loss of all detail. Most detail is missing from the reverse with the exception of a linear border. The vessel has been slightly flattened, and the surface is heavily corroded and worn resulting in a creamy powdery surface which is a coating of lead oxide.
These artefacts would have originally been sold in monasteries and cathedrals as pilgrim souvenirs and would have contained holy water usually associated with a relic etc that was thought to has spiritual properties. These date to the 14th to 15th century. |
