Title
1138 Early Medieval buckle.JPG
Description
English: Cast copper alloy belt buckle length 31mm, width 24mm, thickness 7mm, weight 6.34g. Oval frame, the rear edge is 4mm wide, the arms gently expand to the leading edge which is 6mm wide. In the centre of the leading edge is a forward projecting knop with a narrowed waist. The knop is oval in cross-section and measures 8mm long, 8mm wide and 7mm tall, the top is stepped.

There are two projecting lugs on the rear edge which would have originally been a second loop that would have held the narrowed strap bar, this was broken in antiquity. Both the obverse and reverse sides of the fame have a series of angled lines held within a recessed border covering the surface.

Buckles such as these are Scandinavian in origin and were not manufactured in this country. Examples have been found in excavations on Gotland, which came from contexts dating to the 10th to 11th century.
