Description Gen. John R. Allen (U.S. Marines), commander of International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, has visited Camp Arena, in order to do a reconnaissance of Salma dam, a major development project to improve the living conditions and the economy in the west of the country. Along with RC-West Commander, Brig. Gen. Luciano Portolano (Italian army), after meeting the governor of Herat, Dr. Daud Saba, near the ancient citadel recently restored in the heart of Herat city, went to Salma dam to assess the progress of the works on the dam and security conditions. This project is aimed to the build the power plant critical to the development of the energy system in the west region of Afghanistan (West Power System), and will enable local people to benefit of new irrigated crops, thus improving significantly the current living conditions.
