English: Men of the 10th (Service) Battalion, Black Watch (26th Division) take a break from digging trenches in the hills between the villages of Aivatli and Laina, December 1915. The defences dug on the hills surrounding the port of Salonika between December 1915 and May 1916 were known to British troops as 'The Birdcage' due to the vast amounts of barbed wire used during the construction. |
