Title
1099 Roman plate brooch view2.jpg
Description
English: Copper alloy plate brooch length 19mm, width 15mm, thickness 10mm, weight 3.38g. The artefact would have been circular in plan, but much of the edges have been lost as a result of corrosion. The centre has a central boss that has been riveted into place emanating out from the boss are six spokes, most of which have corroded away, these would be separate from the main body of the brooch and are held in place by the central boss.

Only the base of the catch plate and spring mount remains on the reverse, the rest having corroded away. There are traces of gold on the face where the artefact was originally gilt. The overall condition is very poor, corrosion has eaten away at the all of the extremities leaving a light green powdery surface.

Hattatt dates these spoked disk brooches to the 2nd to 3rd century (2000, 365).
