1073 Bronze Age sickle face.jpg |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy sickle length 132mm, width 32mm, thickness 15mm, weight 106g. Curved ridge runs down the spine of the blade on the dorsal edge of the sickle, the blade runs three quarter of the length of the object from the tip. The blade this edge is narrowed from the dorsal side only, at a low angle. There is a transverse ridge separating the sickle blade with the tang on the piece, ridge is semi circular in cross section 10mm high 23mm long, and 6mm thick. The tang behind is missing, this is an old break. The ventral is flat with striations on this emanating from the blade diagonally left and right due to use and densely packed striations along the edge of the blade where it was probably sharpened.
The dorsal of the piece is pitted partly due to corrosion but mainly as a result of poor casting. The artefact has a rich brown patina, the extremities of the piece have suffered from corrosion particularly along the blade. A similar artefact was found in a Bronze Age hoard at Edington Burtie and was dated to 1200-1000BC (Pearce S, 1983, 426-427, 635) Pearce S, 1983, The Bronze Age Metalwork of South Weston Britain, part ii, BAR 120(ii). |
