Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Thali temple of Varavoor Thrissur is an 8th to 9th century Hindu temples complex, belong to the Sthali tradition that illustrates Chera architecture. The site has been a source of several important inscriptions over the centuries. In the early inscriptions, this temple is called the Nityavicaresvara Kovil.

The Thali (Sthali) temple of Varavur near Thrissur is among the eighteen Hindu temples along the southwestern coast of India that were not only a religious hub of the regional community, they were one of the economic, educational, performance arts and social centers. At these Thali temples, public events and sites where public projects and issues were discussed, planned and approved.

The temple is dedicated to Shiva, but like major historic Hindu temples in India, the complex includes shrines and artwork of Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakti traditions. The main temple faces east, has a square floor plan, a deepastambham, a valiyabalikkal, a mandapam and vatilmadam, followed by the garbhagriyam. Both the north and south side of the temple base have 10th to 12th century vattezhuthu inscriptions. The complex includes a historic thitappalli (temple kitchen to feed pilgrims).

The sandhara-type temple stands on a jagati and has a dvitala vimana. The structure combines wood and stone, while recent restorations have added lime and plaster. The notable artwork include salabhanjikas, dwarapalikas, vyalas, Ganesha and Dakshinamurti. The complex includes shrines for Bhagavati and Sastha; however, these are modern era additions to the historic complex.
