English: VISIT TO A DERVISH

SIGNED MAHMUD MUZAHHIB, BUKHARA, DATED AH 968/1560-61 AD From a Gulistan of Sheikh Muslih al-Din Sa'di, gouache heightened with gold on paper, a number of figures, some leading horses and all wearing brightly coloured robes stand around a winding silver stream visiting a pair of dervishes who sit in and before a cave, a large tree with autumnal leaves and inhabited by birds towards the centre of the composition, the saddle of one of the horses in the foreground with the signature of Mahmud Muzahhib and date of 968, 2ll. of elegant nasta'liq above, laid down between gold and polychrome rules on wide cream border decorated with gold floral scroll, the verso with 12ll. of similar nasta'liq in black, red, gold and blue, arranged in one and two columns on similar wide margins Painting 11 x 6¼in. (27.8 x 15.7cm.); folio 14 x 9¼in. (35.4 x 23.2cm.)

One very unusual feature in this painting is the figure on the extreme right who is clearly wearing a band which covers his left eye. It has been suggested that this, as it is so unusual to encounter, could be the patron of the manuscript.
