Description
English: Former bank building at 1 Cattley Street, Burnie, on the corner of Marine Terrace. Occupied by Seabreeze café, apparently with an apartment hotel upstairs. It was constructed for the Bank of Van Diemen's Land (V.D.L Bank), and completed in 1892. However, since the VDL Bank went bankrupt in 1891, it was sold by the liquidators to Messrs Fairthorne who used it as a chemist shop. In 1899 it was purchased and occupied by the National Bank of Tasmania, which was taken over by the Commercial Bank of Australia in 1918, which continued to use the building. It was designed by Robert Flack Richards of Hobart and built by F. Bushby of Launceston under supervison of Thomas Kenner.[1][2][3] Described by the Burnie Heritage Study (2012) as Federation Free Style of architecture.[4].
