Title
0A5773 Anglo-Saxon brooch
Description
English: Anglo-Saxon copper alloy brooch fragment, 30mm long and 22mm wide. The object is in a fair condition with a pale green patina and weighs 10.28 grams. The object consists of the head plate of a brooch and is rectangular in form. It has a central raised square which may have a punched border. Below this plate is the start of the brooches bow which is semi-circular in form with a hollow reverse and decoarted with two raised collars. On the left hand side of the rectangular plate is a small protrusion which is raised slightly. The reverse contains the remains of one large lug, 13mm wide and 4mm deep. Helen Geake writes: It is not particularly easy to reconcile this description with the image, as none of the bow appears to survive (there is merely a scar where it has broken off). The image shows the headplate from a cruciform brooch, very worn, with a raised central panel, a wing to either side, and one small integrally cast waisted top knob. The remains of a single pin bar lug can be seen on the reverse.
