Description
English: Cast copper alloy Roman brooch with open work catchplate.

This style of brooch is unusual Polden Hill type, with Colchester features. The wings have end caps (typical of Polden Hill brooches), and a hollow reverse creating a box in which the spring mechanism fits, being attached through the upwardly projecting loop at the top of the bow. Only one end cap remains, with a hole in the centre. The bow shows more similarities to a Colchester-type brooch. Sub-circular in section with a flattened front surface. A ridge at the head tapers down and a groove runns vertically down the centre of the bow. The catchplate is complete.

The brooch is slightly bent through post depositional processes.

Similar examples can be found in the Richborough excavation reports (nos. 208-210) and also Mackreth 2001, 183, no.7. these reports suggest that this derivative style is more commonly associated with Soutyh-western regions.
